Update to In-Person EMS Classes Restrictions

In keeping with the current guidance from the Governor and the DPH Commissioner, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, OEMS is releasing the attached updated document:
- Advisory 20-05-01 In-Person EMS Courses and Psychomotor Exams During COVID-19. This Advisory permits the resumption of in-person didactic EMS education courses, with social distancing and PPE protection. It also allows for larger psychomotor exams, if applicable social distancing and PPE requirements are met, removing the 10-person cap on psychomotor exams, while also establishing a minimum of 8 candidates per exam.
Updates to the Comprehensive Personal Protective Equipment Guidance

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is sharing THIS updated comprehensive guidance to clarify information regarding the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that health care personnel (HCP) use in clinical care areas. This update clarifies best practices regarding the use of N95 respirators and alternatives for HCP caring for an individual who is presumed or confirmed to be infected with COVID-19 and appropriate use of gowns.
Remember that CMEMSC has fit test kits available to Region II services at no cost. Contact the director if this would benefit your service.
Please read carefully for proper use of: facemasks, respirators, eye protection, isolation gowns, and gloves.

Beginning Friday 12/18/20 at 7am, NO VISITORS will be allowed in the Emergency Departments.
*Reminder: Parents of pediatric patients, Attorneys of patients, and companions or designated support persons for patients with a disability or special needs are not considered visitors but must be screened prior to entering.

NoticeZ: Updated Statewide Treatment Protocols and Advisory 20-01-27 Required Medication List, Effective April 1, 2020
The MA Department of Public Health’s (Department’s) Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS) has issued the updated Statewide Treatment Protocols v. 2020.1, which will become effective April 1, 2020. The updated Protocols are available at https://www.mass.gov/doc/emergency-medical-services-pre-hospital-treatment-protocols-version-20201-effective-4120-pdf/download . The change chart, the memo describing the changes, and the required medications advisory can also all be found on the OEMS website’s Statewide Treatment Protocols page at https://www.mass.gov/lists/emergency-medical-services-statewide-treatment-protocols . These Protocols have been developed and approved for recommendation to the Department by the Medical Services Committee of the Emergency Medical Care Advisory Board (EMCAB).
EMS personnel must be trained to operate under these updated Protocols and any pertinent changes to the required medications advisory, as applicable, by April 1,2020. Ambulance services and their training officers are responsible for ensuring all their EMS personnel have successfully completed training before implementing these Protocols and advisory updates. Once all service EMS personnel have been so trained and the service is appropriately equipped, they may start operating under these Protocols, but all must operating under these Protocols by April 1,2020. Please note that documentation of successful completion of Protocol training for all service EMS personnel, will be reviewed by Department inspectors and investigators.
Training materials will be available soon from the Region II office. We are also taking orders for the printed books that will be sent to the printer later today.
