Radio Speaking Guidelines
1) Reduce background noise
2) Press the “push to talk” button for 1 second (or more if needed) before speaking
3) Speak slowly and clearly
4) Repeat double digit numbers with the individual digits (e.g., 15, one-five)
5) Keep transmissions brief
6) Use objective, impartial statements
7) Avoid slang, codes, or unauthorized abbreviations
8) DO NOT use phrases like “at this time;” they serve no purpose and waste time
9) Refer to nursing staff by hospital’s name or sir or ma’am
10) Refer to physicians by name (Dr. Smith), sir or ma’am or Doctor (not “Doc”)
11) DO NOT give patient names over the radio
