In response to the surge of pediatric respiratory illness that has been seen across the Commonwealth and throughout the country, the use of high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) treatment has increased in many hospital systems. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) has obtained a limited supply of HFNC delivery devices, which it is able to loan to ambulance services to help build corresponding capacity for this treatment in the interfacility transfer (IFT) aspect of the EMS setting. This is being supported by MDPH’s Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS) and Office of Preparedness and Emergency Management (OPEM) in conjunction with the Massachusetts Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) program.
